I am an Online college student. I have a back up computer that needs a new processor. Here is the catch, I need to keep it a 32 bit system. Some of the programs I have won't run on a 64 bit system. Some of the websites have trouble with 64 bit systems. I already failed one course because my system crashed during a final exam. I have done some research and found out that a faster front bus speed is good. I also am concerned with compatibility. Besides the socket, I think the maximum allowable speed of the motherboard has to match the processor speed. I have no idea what the clock speed is. The frontside bus speed is 400 MHz. I didn't know the operating voltages had to be the same. Is the Max TDP referring to the operating voltage? Mine is running at 66.7 Watts according to Intel's speck sheet. The original processor is a Intel 1.8 GHz, L2 cache @ 256 KB, 400 MHz FBS Speed, 66.7 Watt TDP, VID Voltage Range 1.575-1.75 V. Pentium 4 Processor. If you need more information please refer to:

It is in a VPR Matrix 180R manufactured by Best Buy with no support information. The support from the manufacturing company basically fell off the face of the earth. The tower at my sister's house at the moment and just bought a (cheapie) OEM motherboard from eBay a day ago. I want to use this as a learning experience before I build my first one. How do I match the maximum allowable transfer speed of the motherboard with the processor? What is the fastest 32 bit processors out there without knowing the socket types?

Update 3:The system crash was with the 64 bit system.
I have software programs on the Native American Indian language that cannot be used on a 64 bit system.
I have a game I love to play that cannot be used on a 64 bit system.

Man...you have to know what socket your processor is using in order to be able to buy a more powerful AND compatible processor.I see you have a 400mhz FSB.You might be using socket 478 or 423.You are quite limited.Search for 400MHz FSB Intel Processors(I know there aer 2GHz processors but you will need some more speed in order to see a difference). If you have the stock graphics card-32MB GeForce 2 then upgrade to a better one on AGP-if you buy a GeForce 4 (64MB) you will notice a difference but you should go with something better-take in account that you´re probably using AGP 2x compatible motherboard or AGP universal motherboard is the first one applies to you then search for an AGP video card that is compatible -that has the slot divided into three parts. So ....search for 400MHz FSB Intel Processors because I don´t think your motherboard supports 533 FSB.Also-I think you´re using socket 423.The fastest processor with 400MHz FSB is a 2.6 GHz Pentium 4.
64 bit systems are fairly new but are never the cause for software crashes... They are mainstream now and almost any software is made to run with 64 bit or has a patch for it...
64 bit is mainstream today and everything will work for 64 bit. I wouldn't concern yourself over the 64 or 32 bit aspect of a processor as it was most likely something else that caused you to fail that class (regarding computer issues). Meaning that it might have been that your 32 bit p4 was too old to sustain the needed speeds to keep the website operational.
Point is, a 64 bit procesor will work better than any 32 bit processor today.
