(4+8) + 3 = (8+4) + 3
Is this commutative property of addition or associative property of addition? I'm aware of both of their definitions, but I don't know if the equation above is commutative or associative.

It's commutative, because we moved the 4 and the 8, but we didn't move the parentheses.
When you change the parentheses, you are changing the association, so that would be associative. The parentheses can be thought of as making a grouping, an association.
When you move the operands around, it's commutative. Think of it like people commuting to work. They move from one place to another.
Communtative property . If it was associative it wouldve written (4+8) + 3 = (4+3) + 8
