I Don't Get This.
Can You Help Me By Explaining How To Do It.
And Not Just Give Me The Answer.
The Problem Is...
6 ly+1l = 60
the l's are the Things that mean everything in the l's are positive.
i forgot what there called =)

6ly+1l/6=60/6
|y+1|=10
y+1=10 or y+1=-10
y=9 or -11
1. Divide 6 both sides.
2. Set two equations with 10 and -10 and solve for y.
Ok...
So in this problem the | | (absolute value bars) sort of act like parenthesis...
The only thing is you can't distribute the 6....
6|y+1|=60 so you have to divide by six on both sides
so it would be (6|y+1|)/6=60/6
this equals |y+1|=10
then it would be y+1=+-(plus or minus)10
which makes the problems...
y+1=10 and y+1=-10 (negative 10)
and so you subtract 1 on both sides on both equations
and you get y= 9, -11
Hope this helps you understand this better..
First you have to divide each side by 6, when you divide 6 from the first side the two 6's cancel out (6/6=1), and 60 divided by 6 equals 10. The new problem looks like
Iy+1I = 10
now you can figure out what y could equal, it could equal 9, because 9+1=10, but y could also equal -11, because -11 plus one equals -10, but it is turned into a positive, equaling positive 10. So your answer is y= 9; y= -11
Absolute value. It's really pretty easy.
6|y+1|=60
If you divide each side by 6, you get
|y+1|=10
absolute value problems have two answers, though. In order to find these, you need to right the problem equaling the true answer and it's opposite.
y+1=10;y+1=-10
-1 -1 -1 -1 Subtract one on each side
You get y=9 and y=-11
Once you learn how to do it, its super easy. Just remember, absolute value problems almost always have 2 answers.
l means absolute value, and mesure the distance in the number line from 0
so 6ly+1l=60
first distribute the 6 so
6y+6=60
subtract 6 form both sides
6y=54
then divide by 6 in both sides
y=9
i think you would distribute the 6 into the |'s. then the equation would be
6y+6=60. then you would isolate the variable by subtracting the 6 from both sides. soooo
6y+6=60
-6 -6
-------------
6y=54 next you would get rid of the other 6 by dividin both sides by6so:
`````````` =
6 6
y=9
6Iy+1I=60
it would basically be 6(y+1)=60
it would be that because the I are absolute value which means distance from 0
6y+6=60
-6=-6
6y=54
6y divided by 6= y and 54 divided by 6= 9
so y=9
it's the absolute value
y+1 must equal |10| or |-10|
so y+1=-10
or y+1=10
y=-11,9
