I'm 23 weeks pregnant and noticed an odd spot within my belly button. I figured, albeit disgustedly, that perhaps it was some kind of lint and started trying to get it out with very limited success. My hubby was trying to help me (true love, LOL) and we were using tweezers to attempt to pull it out, but it appeared to perhaps be attached. Today I got brave and went digging again and pulled it out further only to find that it is the end of a small stump that is brown-maroonish in color. Now I'm wondering if this could be the remnants or stump of my umbilical cord as an infant? Any insight would be great...
Update:Yes, it's dried up.

Wow that's so strange!
I guess you could have a bit of your cord still stuck there...I'm assuming your belly button is popping out from baby?! I always thought that looked so cute, lol!
I know this is very late, 8 years late but I just wanted to say that my umbilical cord stump finally was removed as well after 33 years of pain, infection and discomfort. I kept mine and bagged it up so yes, that's very likely what you had, It happens when the umbilical cord is cut wrong and or your parents do not keep it clean and dry until the entire thing falls out. I'm actually shocked at how small my belly button is now that I've finally removed it and the best part? The pain is gone!!
Well I can see ladies making comments here but I came in search of the same thing! Thank God there is a forum here, I know I m too late in replying to this thread as well but after 33 years, the remnants of umbilical cord just came off. I never had any discomfort in my belly button, in fact when I used to sit, at times I used to play with it, it was long enough to almost reach top of my bellybutton, all dark brown (like decayed skin) but hard.
The only thing I noticed, a couple of weeks before it came off, I could smell really bad odour and discharge from the belly button which I used to clean with ear buds and aftershave spirit. 2 weeks later, while just playing with it, I felt it was too loose and it just came off, same as MJPM said, black with white end ... and now my belly button looks so clear! and at times I put my hand on my bellybutton just to realise it s not there anymore and I m not sure, sometimes I miss it too lol :)
When I was about to finish taking a shower today, I thought there was a dead spider on the floor as it looks like solid black with a little amount of white. To my surprise after drying my hair, I noticed that my belly button is deep already, umbilical cord remants as I call it was already gone. I went back to the shower where I left just that piece so I could pick it up with a tissue paper. And yes! Thank God, after 36 years of carrying it, finally it came off. I was asking two doctors opinion already but then they just told me that maybe it was normal although I mentioned to to them that it was very unfortable especially when wearing pants/trousers. Last week, I was trying to move the tip of it but felt discomfort so I stopped it.
It could be. Ive also heard of hernia's presenting through the belly button but that would have stuck out and not stayed hidden. Best to ask a dermatologist or other doctor. Try not to mess with it too much.
I'm not sure about that at all but I know after I had my son just a week or two later it smelled horrible.
Is it dried up? If it is, it could be umbilical cord.
it does happen. sounds weird but its true. i bet thats what it was. my ex father in law had his taken off when he was about 12
