Algebra - Word Problem Help?

I have 2 word problems I need help with:

1) Find the measures of two complementary angles if one is five times the other.

2) Bethany has 26 nickels and quarters. Altogether she has $2.90. How many of each coin does dhe have?

A little help would be great. I'm not so good at math, let alone word problems.

Thanks!

    1) x + 5x = 90

    6x = 90

    x = 15

    2) n + q = 26

    .05n + .25q = 2.90 == n + 5q = 58

    4q = 32

    q = 8, n = 18

    The second one is:

    18 x 5 = 90

    8 x 25 = 200

    ______

    290

  • 1 decade ago

    1) x+5x = 6x =90

    x = 15

    so 2 angles are 15 and 75

    2) N+Q = 26

    N*.05 + Q*0.25 = 2.90

    substitution

    (26-Q)*0.05 + Q*0.25 = 2.90

    1.30 + .20*Q = 2.90

    1.60 = .20*Q

    Q = 8

    18 nickels and 8 quarters

    1) Complementary angles = 90 degrees

    One angle= 5x the other

    Let the other be x

    5x + x=90

    6x=90

    x=15

    The second one is just guess and check...

    2.) 2.90 = .05x + .25y

    there's your setup..and basically what you are going to want to do is get one to = 0 to get the answer for the other..
