you should be fine to update the cpu, however attention must be paid to these notes.
certain cpu's are supported by specific CHIPSETS so your range has now been restricted
i5 2340m is supported by HM65,HM67,QM67 chipsets only
also it only fits into a certain socket ie PPGA988
see first link for all cpu's supported by this socket
then a cpu needs to listed in the BIOS. If it is not listed you cannot fit it.
This is tricky to find out, but if that laptop series had a model with a better
cpu in it then that helps as we would know that cpu was in the list.
also we can look at BIOS updates and just see if Acer have been helpful
listing added cpu's.
then we can also look at the intel site using the link below, and any cpu RELEASED after the bios date will probably not appear in the BIOS.
finally each cpu has a TDP, so it consumes a number of watts. any pc will designed to take similar cpu's of similar tdp values.
all of the cpu's listed in the link should be POSSIBLE, they all fit the socket, they all have similar TDP. so up to an i7-2640M should be possible subject to acer including it in the bios list.
You cannot "update" a laptop processor :) . You need to remove it and swap it with a different one, which may be simple if you know how to do it. I also have an acer, and it's about 5 years old now. I couldn't play any games with a high FPS and the computer itself was very slow.
I recommend you ask someone with a bit more knowledge, since they can answer all your questions. If they are also up to it, they could also swap your processor with one that you have bought.
You can't upgrade a laptop's processor........If you want to change your processor like i7. New processor should match your laptop's mother board configuration.......
