im upgrading my computer from 2- 256 mb sticks of SDRAM to 1 full gig of DDR memory ( i have 2 slots each for both). my question is should i buy and install only one 1gb stick or would it be better to install two 512mb sticks... simple question, looking for serious answers only....
Update:i have 2 slots for sdram and 2 slots for ddr...(so 4 slots total). i can use either memory. can only hold 1gb total memory.

If your old memory was of SDRAM type, the motherboard wont work with DDR RAM.
You should stick with the exact same type of memory, (same manufacturer to be safe) if you want to upgrade your RAM.
And about buying two 512 mb or 1 gb stick, i prefer the two 512 mb memory sticks, generally because they are cheaper than the 1 GB. There is no difference in performance whatsoever.
I dont think there is a need to upgrade the memory stick in the future because i think your computer is using SDRAM, which is quite old nowadays.
So if you want to upgrade in the future, its better to buy a brand new system.
You state that you have "2 slots for each both" so I am unsure if you have 2 slots or 4. If you have 2 slots, but there is also a 3rd option. If you only have 2 RAM slots you could buy the 1GB and keep one of the 256MB and you'll have even more RAM.
You can run a scan at Crucial.com to see what RAM is compatible with your computer. In some instances SDRAM cannot be replaced with DDR.

Many say that placing 2 rams helps make your computer work faster (just like dual core). Although you may want to leave room for one more slot just in case; its up to you. Also try considering a DDR2 model for better results. If so, better check your motherboard for compatibility.
>How plenty would a good laptop reminiscence improve value? For RAM, anticipate to pay sort of $15 to twenty consistent with gigabyte of standard DDR2 RAM. >would ram, portraits, gbs, etc be upgraded? RAM would be upgraded -- the common abode computing gadget would be upgraded to sort of four GB or greater of RAM. in case you're working under 2 gigabytes of reminiscence, you could improve. in case you have precisely 2 GB's, you could or won't have improve, reckoning on how heavy your application utilization is. in case you should multitask multiple apps, run Photoshop etc., 4 GB is greater suitable. portraits -- significant while it comprises playing video games. usually a sub $a hundred greenback card is sufficient to play maximum casual video games. I recommend observing the Radeon 4670, it rather is not a useful card, in spite of if it relatively is sufficient to satiate casual gaming desires. GB's -- i think of you're touching on tensepersistent means. back, it rather is particularly person-friendly to enhance your tensepersistent -- only purchase yet another one and stick it in. in spite of if it rather is even much less complicated to basically purchase your self an exterior USB or E-SATApersistent, which you plug in whenever you like it.
if you install 1 then if it does not work then your done but if you install 2 then if one is down the other is there to backup. If you install its much faster.
go with 1gig--1 bar. that leaves room for expansion later.
