I am pretty computer literate, but I was wondering for the rest of you out there: can I do something to compensate for a low amount of RAM on my computer? I recently purchased RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, and after a couple of days it would crash after about 10 minutes. I got the "Could not allocate memory amount" message each time. Is there some sort of trick or program that could help? Also, I'm due for a hard drive defragmentation: will that help?

An end user (like your self) shall not be worried about memory management.
Operating system of the computer does memory mangement i.e. conserve, use or free up memory. Even if the memory is not enough, the computer MUST NOT crash.
If RAM is not enough, operating system uses Hard Drive.
You could increase the size of Hard Drive Cache for RAM use.
I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in/ useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.
hi , goto :
1)start->run->msconfig->start up ---- disable any unwanted startup item
2)try increasing your PAGEFILE (or SWAP) space on harddisk drives, this is the amount of space on your drives that is used as RAM
There is no substitute for all the RAM you can squeeze in, or can afford, whichever comes first.

( Matt B ) Add more ram.
try disabling all start up items in your STARTUP in MSCONFIG.
go to START then RUN then type MSCONFIG
