I'm an Australian and I don't. Infact, I find it hard to believe that other countries label us as racist people. We are one of the world's most multi-cultural countries. We don't see skin colour or race, we see people. When skits like that one on "hey hey" with the 'Jackson Jive' play on tv I don't see it as racist at ALL. I don't actually watch that show, but I could label it as stupid and not funny but not racist! No one ever gets treated differently in Australia for skin colour or race. Infact, the only racism I've seen is by Lebonese against Indians in Australia..not Australians!

I don't think you really want to know.
In any case, that's what the world thinks (not just yahoo answers).
Perhaps they base it on these facts :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism_in_Australia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racial_Violence_In_Au...
Although there is so much more that has been left out of that article.
not any more than the U.S. is
I thought this Aussie was spot on:
Opinion piece in The West Australian by Ben Martin
...(The blackface routine) is not clever. It's a cheap trick which may have got laughs back in the bad old days when belittling a black man just because he was black was acceptable. That's called racism. Please don't mistake the routine for a clever piece of self-deprecation by the comedian. He is asking you to accept that a black man should be the subject of ridicule. That's dangerous-but not as dangerous as the howls of outrage from people who think they have a right to find the blackface routine funny. Their defence is simple: if they find it funny, then they are correct, no matter that others might feel pain or take offence. They dress it up as a freedom of speech argument or a backlash against political correctness. "I won't be told what I can and can't laugh at and offended black people should just get over it," they would say. Consider the flipside of that argument: If the subject of ridicule doesn't think a joke is funny, you don't have the right to tell them that they shouldn't be offended. We all know what it's like to be the butt of one or two jokes. It's funny, a bit uncomfortable, but it wears off pretty quickly as the next joke is told. But what about being the victim of racism? A black man lives with that every day-it's a sick joke that doesn't go away. If you laughed at the Jackson Jive skit, then consider why you laughed. It may be an unpleasant self-examination. I'd like to think your smile vanishes quickly. We're all a little bit racist-it's part of our nature. But it's indefensible, so please don't try. Recognise it, try to empathise with the victims...
I object to white people being continually called racist. There are many racists in other colours and races, but it seems to be the white people that unfairly draw the blame.
Australia is no different to anywhere else,if you want to work and pay taxes, mind your own business and behave here, then the world is your oyster.
Some races come here as students, or illegal immigrants, to rape cheat live on the tax payers and cause trouble, then they play the racist card when they get a belting. The ones that are screaming the loudest have caused trouble in Fiji,Singapore,HongKong,England, South Africa, Canada the USA
New Zealand and now Australia. These poor people always seem to be the victims, and there bad name has and always will precede them. They come from a country where they have the worst caste system in the world, where racism is quite normal, and exceeded only by there arrogance.
I don't give a rats ass about skin colour or race of any person, only the quality of the persons themselves. However, when those people who adverse each other and us. I could easily push these people away. From your perspective this may seem to be racist action. I don't care if you get it right or wrong. I don't think it is racist. If you can't homogenize with the life down under.
This country was born from English convicts who first landed at Botany Bay in ~1770. those convicts and there English Governor's forced the indigenous Australian Aborigines by gunpowder and death to yield their land and the first settlement was established shortly after. We each here have nearly 100.000 Square Kilometres to each person to call home, its a big place.
I am and we are not interested in the circumspect greive you may be harbouring.
I am Australian too, and i have experience racism towards me, like "go get your boat out the shed and go home" when i came here by plane and became citizen after 2 years legally. 22 years later I still see it around me.
You have to understand and try not to be defensive about it, you cannot really comprehend what racism is, until you have experienced it.
and by saying "lebonese against indians in Ausgtralia.... not Australians"
You are unconsciously already saying that they are not really Australians by your distinction of their ancestry.
THERE are Aboriginals, Torres Strait Islanders, Kiwi Australains, Lebanese Australains, Arab Australians and boat people from all over the place.
And then there are just Australians — white Australians, ordinary Australians, who love their country; Australians who don’t really care about the skin colour of others — until they find themselves on the wrong end of abuse because they happen to be white Australians.
You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction; you call me “Australian dog”, “white c**t or pri**”, “honky” and “whitey” and that’s OK.
But if I call you “blackfella”, “towelhead”, “****” or “chink”, you call me a racist.
You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you, so why are the Aboriginal suburbs such as Redfern and Asian suburbs such as Lakemba, Bankstown and Cabramatta the most dangerous places to live?
You have Invasion Day. You have Hashoah. You have Ma’uled Al-Nabi. But if we had a White Pride Day you would call us racists.
If we had an organisation for whites to “advance” our lives, we’d be racists.
If we had a university fund that only gave white students scholarships, we’d be racists.
There are many indigenous organisations that are only open to Aboriginals. Are there any organisations restricted to whites only?
Of course not because if there were, we would be called racists.
Australia has a flag that represents everybody.
Aboriginals have a flag that represents only them but they don’t think that’s racist.
However, if white Australians dared to have a flag that only represented white Australians, and if white athletes who won an Olympic event ran around draped in such a flag, they would be condemned as racists.
If you are not white, you can march for your race and rights.
If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists.
I am proud.
But you call me racist.
Why is it that whites only can be racists?
The only Australian racism I've personally seen is against the aboriginals, though I've had friends who, after coming back from vacationing there, say the Indians catch a lot of flack.
there is racism everywhere, you just stated that the only racism you've seen was by Lebanese against Indians in Australia..not Australians!(theyre still australians, they just have Indian decent) so yea, australia is racist lol
I know where your coming from I am Aussie too, I saw the Hey Hey thing and thought Harry Connick made a huge issue out of it, it was totally unnecessary.
However as much as we are getting use to the multi-cultural-ness there is still a whole lot of racist idiots here, I am NOT one of them.
cheers :)
Yes they are.
Today, In petrol station, a guy stares at the another dude coz he wears turban to work, he couldnt take his eyes of him.
And yes, some Aussies really are, they are just keeping it. Another reason is they are far away from home, which gives them more insecurities and less option of places to move around coz they are surrounded.
No offense but it seems like you already have your answer as a "No we are Not" so im just giving my opinion.
I'm Australian too, I don't think we're that racial. One of my close friends is 'black' and he found the Jackson Jive skit funny and didn't take it personally, as it was only a joke :) x
