I want to make it so if A1 is "YES", its value is 1 (or any other value not 0); if A1 is "NO" its value is 0. That way I can total the scores for a category and give a grade. It's a survey of sorts.
Update:If I use Matt's answer, I get a circular reference error, as I'm inputing a formula into a cell that can't compute without the value of that same cell.

Matt's formula is quite appropriate, if used in any other cell than A1.
However, if you wish to replace the text entered in A1 with a specific value, in the same cell, you will have to use VBA. If I was going to code this I would simply 'countif' the values in the categories and return the totals in the appropriate total cell. That way you leave the survey responses 'as is'.
=if(A1="NO",0,1)
this will give anything that is NO the value of 0, and everything else a 1.
