Matt's formula is quite appropriate, if used in any other cell than A1. However, if you wish to replace the text entered in A1 with a specific value, in the same cell, you will have to use VBA. If I was going to code this I would simply 'countif' the values in the categories and return the totals in the appropriate total cell. That way you leave the survey responses 'as is'.
