GRUB is looking for stage 1l5, which is in /boot/grub - which you deleted. Start your XP CD, go to the repair console and run fixmbr.
If that doesn't do it, you'll have to make a small partition somewhere, install GRUB to, setting it to boot only the Windows partition, it and leave it alone.
If you don't have the Windows XP install disk you will have to reinstall Ubuntu. Actually anything which will fix the Master Boot Record (and remove grub) should work, but grub usually writes something to the MBR while keeping the bulk of its files on the Linux partition. Once you get rid of it, get rid of grub, or you will have this problem.
