I've heard of a lot of people that, in high school, had high GPA's. However, once they reached college, it almost instantly dropped. But I've also heard of the complete opposite: Kids who get 3.6's in high school, but skyrocket in college.
Is it all based upon work ethic, or is there a pattern?

There's statistics, but I'll tell you the most common pattern: The freshman 15. A student in middle school with a 100% goes into high school, losing 15% in marks, and gaining 15 pounds. Keeping the same effort and going into university, they lose another 15% and gain another more 15 pounds from depression from the 15%. Now, you go from an asian 100% to a 70%, and you're 30 pounds overweight. I'm a high school freshman, and I'll tell you, my average went from an 85% to a 70%, and I also gained 20 pounds. The freshman 15 is very accurate.
In college grades are calculated differently. In high school B,B-,B+ equal 3 (4 for AP or Ib courses) but in college B =3 B- =2.7 B+=3.4 so it is weighted differently. Usually people who complained they dropped in grades are the ones who got 4.0-5.0 which is NOT possible in college (except the 4.0 part!)
Plus a pattern does occur
Lower Division (frosh and soph level courses) are stupid easy especially "required non major courses." Most are just show up, bash your head on the desk, and get an A. Eventually you get to upper division (jun and sen level courses) hence are a significantly higher in work load (you have no idea) yet you don't care because it is what you want to do. Hence, naturally put more effort into the work.
