You need to create the share first before you can map to it. If you are an admin on the server you can connect to the admin shares which are hidden from browsing. For example \\servername(or IP address)\c$ or d$ or whatever drive you want to connect to. These admin shares are enabled by default. The dollar sign indicates a hidden share.
In Windows use the Map Network Drive feature of Windows Explorer, or if you prefer the command line use this example to map sharename on servername to your f: drive (net use f: \\servername\sharename).
