Backing up data isn't easy with Windows. Your best bet is to take just the saved game files from the game and reinstall it once you've formatted. The easiest way to format is to put in your OS CD (Windows XP, Windows 2000, etc) when the computer first turns on and boot from the CD, then select to install the OS, then delete the partition you want to reformat, then select the unformatted partition and format it (chose the one with, "NTFS," and, "fast," in the title), then reinstall your OS. But be sure you have network card drivers on hand so you can connect to the internet and download updates. But, first and foremost, I recommend against reformatting.
