Put aluminum foil around the base of the tree. Cats do not like the way it feels on their feet!! This works. I've tried it. Be sure it goes out as far as the bottom branches.
We hang jingle bells around the bottom part of the tree to act as an alrm, you can hear the bells jingle when the animal gets too close to the tree or is trying to climb it or play with the ornaments.
We also would wrap framing wire around the trunk of the tree about midway up, then anchor each end to an eye hook screwed into the wall. This keeps the tree from falling over if your cat climbs it.
I have tried many different ways and the way that worked best for me and inexpensive to boot was hot sauce on paper towels put under the tree each night ( my 8 cats hated the smell and stayed away.) It's nothing that will hurt them and helps to train them to stay away from other things too, like the garbage. Just put a few drops on the top of the garbage and they will stay away. Good luck.

You could try pet repellant. They're sprays that you can buy at the store and cats hate the smell and will stay away from it.
