Well, you'll want to input your router information to start things out. As a note, any DS system prior the the 3DS will have to have your security be WEP. 3DS and onwards are compatible with WPA/WPA2 security. Afterwards, you'll want to get what's called a friend code so you can give people your friend code and they can give you theirs so you can trade with them. Now, make sure you go to the middle woman in the Pokemon center if you want to trade with people whose friend codes you have registered in your PalPad.

1) make sure you exchange pal pad codes with you and your friend.
2) make a pokemon-gl (gloable link) account and register your games onto your account by getting the wifi code off of your game main menu.
3)after that go upstairs in thesecond floor of the pokemon center and talk to the secondlady.
