No router, no wireless connection.
Yes, you can do what you describe. You will need to buy two ethernet cables long enough to connect your desktops to the wireless router that you purchased. The connection is from an ethernet card in your desktops (look for the opening that looks like a telephone jack, but slightly larger) to one of those four jacks on the back of your new router. Your modem will connect (cable) to the router, not a computer. Your laptop will need to be able to log onto the wireless router--and you should do some things to protect it, especially if you are in a dorm, else all your neighbors will use it, too. Get some help setting it up--but you should name the network something other than the default name provider by the manufacturer, turn off the broadcast of the network (or your system) name, use MAC filtering, and most important--use WPA encryption, with a strong key (password), something not easily guessed or broken.
Well Please specify that wireless card you are specifying is a netgear wireless router or not........
If yes then.............
You have netgear network router to share the DSL connection.
Obtain a pair of Ethernet cables for wired networking, or wireless adapters for wireless networking.
Connect each computer to the router using an Ethernet cable, or install the wireless adapters according to the included documentation.
Plug the router into the DSL modem using an Ethernet cable.
Determine the default IP address, username, and password of the router by consulting the documentation that came with it.
Navigate to the router’s web-based control interface by entering “http://192.168.0.xn--1-rhn/ into the router. Replace the numbers with the correct IP address for the router. Type the username and password when prompted.
Set the preferences for the network using the configuration application. Most routers are set by default to use dynamic IP addresses, but they also offer static IP addressing. For wireless networks, one must connect to the router with an Ethernet cable first, in order to set the SSID, wireless channel, encryption and other wireless options.
Enter the user name and password that was assigned by the DSL service provider. Enter them under the section for DSL or PPPoE. On single computers, this information is usually entered into the service provider’s software on the desktop, and it allows the network to authenticate the connection. Some newer modems may not require this information.
Save the settings, reboot the router, and verify that both computers can access the Internet…………..
