both Laptop and Desktop must belong to the same workgroup.
Right-click My Computer, properties and name your computers and workgroup. it doesn't matter what name you choose, just keep it simple.
or you can set an FTP server on either the desktop or the laptop. Not as easy as naming computers and workgroup
Okay, so you want to transfer a file from your desktop to laptop. You said your laptop supports only wireless router. My questions is do your router supports both wire and wireless, if so connect your desktop through wire and connect your laptop through wireless via same network and you can able to transfer the file. If your router or modem doesn't support wireless no other option either you have to fix wireless card to your desktop and you have to share the data.
check whether both of your (laptop and desktop) are in same name, if not rename it to the same name. to do that right click my computer ---> select properties-----> go to computer name --> click change ---> select work group--> give the name. it will work now.
Note: Every laptop has Rj45 connector (LAN card ).
right click on the file you want to share, and go to share, select EVERYONE, and then try to type \\NAME OF YOUR DESKTOP in the search/run box on the laptop, the file should show up there, it might be buried in some folders. also, your iPod is probably formatted in Fat32, which only supports 4 GB files.
