windows defender a poor antispyware program with real time protection.
Free AVG i would not use, why ?
AVG Free does not contain Anti-Rootkit protection so rootkits may be hidden in your system.
AVG Free does not contain the new Safe Downloads & Instant Messaging protection (Web Shield technology) so it does not screen your downloads and communication for viruses and spyware.
Yes, you do need some antispyware programs here are two:
i use kasperky i/sec 2009--this is a free security suite i put together and worked very well for me with not update problems and false positives (avg is known for this)
avira with (pctools )threatfire
spybot or spyware doctor starter
malwarebytes
pctools firewall
firefox 3 and mcafee site advisor
sounds like alot but really has a small impact on ur computer
never had a bad update or a problem getting updates like avg 8-
scans are quick and accurate
all can be gotten from the programs site itself or from here

Just use KASPERKY INTERNET SECURITY 2009, its the bst security out at the moment although it costs but it comes with everything you will need. BTW i wouldnt use 2 anti-virus programs (e.g AVG and Avast) bcoz they can clash and cause errors, its better to stick with one, Kaspersky.

TIPs:
You can only run one AV so make it a good one.
You can run as many antispyware programs as you like but make sure you do not have to many with real time protection.

Please stay away from michael suggestion, under no reason you should have 2 antivirus setup in your computer.
This would cause a major problem in your pc, the virus list from 1 antivirus would be seen as actual viruses by the other.
this is a no no
No it does not provide security against some rootkits, and even though its fast its not reliable enough. try using kaspersky internet security 2009.
