I'm just wondering because I am going to Punta Cana in 2 weeks for my first time. I'm just wondering if I should bring some toys and such for the kids that live there and maybe some stuff for the maids. Are the people that live there poor?

They are always happy when you give them things for their kids. School appliances are one of the best tings to give.
Punta Cana is really the resort capital of DR, so you wont really be seeing the poor parts of the country. If you are staying on a resort, you don't really have to bring toys or anything for kids because they wont be around. Leave the maid $5 and she's absolutely love you!
I stayed at the Punta Cana Princess, and whenever my maid came i'd give her a $5 bill. she brought me and my friend extra beers and sodas, and made sure we always had plenty of towels.
Domicans really just like it when you are curtious to them, and treat the workers like people, not slaves.
You're going to love it! There is a lot of natural beauty there, and the beaches are pristine!!
Just watch out for sankies!! :)
Compared to US, yes most people are rather poor. But you won't see much of that in Punta Cana, because it's a tourists only area. The best thing you can give them is cash. They know how to make 1 dollar go a long ways.
In short, YES.
However when we went at the start of January I was expecting to see something like a 3rd world country outside of the resorts and was surprised to say the least. Yes there are poor people and the housing is not great, but there was a huge amount of cars that cost well in excess of £20k here in the UK, and I do not mean one or two but just as many as you see on the roads here. From what i understand the cost of living is somewhere around $650 per month and the average salary for someone working in the tourism sector is around the $400 per month range, lower if they work in the public sector.
I think there's poor and rich people everywhere. Where my dad lives there's a grand majority of what we would call "poor" people because they don't have as much materials, but they're rich at heart. I always see people happy, listening to music since morning till night
Punta Cana is tourist area, bring toys if u wish i'm sure they will alwyas appreciate it
yes, very poor, its really sad. You can donate stuff like school supplies for the kids.
