Atom is VERY SLOW. It is also very old. If you're buying a brand new laptop then I don't recommend a processor lower than a Core 2 Duo. Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 (very good because it has 8 cores while other ones have 2 cores), all those are fantastic processors for home usage. But the Atom and Celeron processors are really bad and slow.
Intel Atom is used for netbooks and nettops. Atom is not old, it is new(ish). N5xx series is a dual core, 45 nm technology. It is not suitable at all for anything more than streaming 1080p. If you want a desktop CPU go for Intel i5-2500K. If you want something less expensive any AMD Phenom II X4 will do the trick. Just remember to buy a compatible motherboard. If laptop then any new Sandy Bridge i5 would suit the best. Of course any four cored chip from AMD would be good choice also but Intel is faster and better (for now).
One word... NO!!!
The intel atom is mainly used on little netbooks (mini laptops) that will be used to surf the web, write word docs and check email, not advanced stuff like photoshop.
Check out a machine with an intel i5 or i7 processor. I think these will be the best for you although your computer will be a bit more expensive.
Good luck :)
intel atom processors are bad, very slow and usually the graphics really are terrible. as oppossed to the second writer, celeron dual core isnt so bad, depending on what you need it for. dual core celeron is more for basic usage like downloading music, microsoft office, web browsing, using a web cam, things liek that. i have a dual core celeron and i play civilization 5. at least 80 percent(probably more) dont need more then a celeron dual core or a basic amd dual core processor, just companies try to get people thinking they need more so they spend more. the atom processor probably wouldnt handle photoshop very well.
