I initially had this problem when I moved. Upon moving into my new place, I set up my computer and booted it. Everything worked fine except for certain things plugged into my USB ports. My printer, external hard drive, and ipod were incorrectly recognized, although my keyboard mouse and wifi adapter all worked fine. I initially thought it was a software issue and consequently updated my drivers for all previously named devices, but the problem still persisted. I then tested my computer peripherals on other computers, my macbook and another pc; all worked properly. I then deduced the problem to be a hardware issue, and bought a new motherboard (this was after I had reformatted my computer multiple times). This also changed nothing. So most recently I picked up an old computer from a friend, and am using no components from my original computer except for my hard drive. The usb drives are still not working properly. My computer recognizes my external hard drive, but none of the movies stored on it work, upon opening any of the movies in vlc it states "File reading failed: VLC could not read the file (%m)." My printer also doesn't install the drivers correctly. This is frustrating to no end and if someone has any idea what's wrong, please let me know. I also tried all the generic fixes to USB port issues: uninstalling the usb drives and reinstalling, unplugging my computer for 5 mins and rebooting, reinstalling my operating system, kicking my computer multiple times, but nothing has worked, please help.
