Hi,
I built my whitebox PC, including a Coolermaster "silent" CPU heatsink/fan set up. I'm running a Pentium 4 2.93 Ghz CPU with 1 gb of DDR memory. I have installed almico.com's Speedfan utility, which shows my hdd and CPU to run on the hot side, especially since I do run the heck out of my machine. I have installed a dual fan hard drive cooler to help mitigate the effects and it has lowered my HDD temp noticeably. I'm wondering if I switched out my generic PSU, would that make my box quieter? Being a Nite-Owl, my lady is about to convert my garage as a "rec room" for me so she can get some sleep. I have always noticed how quality boxes such as HP or Dell run so much quieter. Not able to fork out $1,000 at the present time, but could a better quality PSU make a difference in noise reduction?. Any ideas? Thank you. Chucky

In my opinion, it's your dual fan hard drive cooler that is making so much noise. The smaller the size of the fan the louder the noise it will make. so better to have 120mm fan to be installed to you machine.
If your PSU is the culprit then a quiet PSU running a 120mm fan will help. I would bet that the hard drive cooler is at fault as they are famous for being loud. Check out the manufacturer's db rating of the cooler and compare it to a good quality 80mm case fan that would pull air in thru the front right across your hard drive.(if you can mount one in front of course) It'd stink to spend $75 or so on a PSU and still end up in the garage when a $5 case fan might have saved you.
