I have a 2gb sandisk sd card and I have pictures and videos on it. As soon as I insert it in the computer and try to access the files it pops up and says it needs to be formatted. I need a way (need it to be free) to get the files off the sd card or is the a way to format it then recover the files.

Try a different computer to see if it does the same.
Some cameras/camcorders need to have the card still in them and use a USB cable to connect to the computer. Find the manual for the camera/camcorder and look under computer section. And you need to use the disk that came with the camera/comcorder and install the software.
Reason is the developers of the camera/camcorder store pictures/videos in a format that windows/mac can not understand so plugging the card directly into the computer will not work. Keep the card in the camera/camcorder and use the USB cable that came with it.
If you format it on your computer then your camera/camcorder most likely will not be able to understand the card until you format it in the camera/camcorder using its controls.
And when transferring through the cable, the camera/camcorder needs to be turned on.
Hi, there
It seems that happens all the time. System indicates your sd card need format and won't let you do it. your SD card may suffer kind of crash thus make it works abnormally. In your case right now put your SD card in safe place don't let it have any chance to meet physical damage.
then the most effective way is getting out your important files inside. Try some recovery programs to see if your files can be found and then achieve recovery. Recommend you to have a try Wondershare Data Recovery.

Just download and install this program on your computer. Connect your SD card, select a function and start scan process to see if your files can be found and then perform recovery. Don't worry this program is secure and won't do any damage to your SD card.
I would suggest that you try recovery software both before and after you format the card. This should give you the best chance to get back your pictures.
for recovery software, asoftech recovery has a good reputation. Download free trial from their website.
