The real problem is that people like to put labels on themselves and say, "I'm this" and "They are that." Pigeonholing yourself and attaching a label to something as individual as EATING habits is idiotic. I just started keeping what I eat a secret, like everything else about me. There is a political group with an agenda about EVERYTHING. Lunatics.
It's not that I don't like pescetarians, but it just makes me upset when they try to call themselves vegetarians. I respect the pescetarians on here, because most of them don't call themselves vegetarians because they spend their days looking at questions in the vegan & vegetarian section. I absolutely welcome them warmly & I have no problem with them. But I know a lot of "vegetarians" that go to my school & such, & they are really just pescetarians so it's just really annoying. & every time I try to tell someone they are a pescetarian instead of a vegetarian, they get all mad. Then they are just like, "I don't feel like explaining everything about being a pescetarian, so I'm just going to say I'm a vegetarian." It's so annoying!
I have no problem with pescetarians. It's a valid dietary choice. but they're simply not the same category as vegetarians and vegans. It's not disrespectful to not put people who eat animals in the category of people who don't eat animals, it is correct to do so. Just like people who only eat birds are not vegearians and people who only eat mammals are not vegetarians.
I don't like it when people spread the myth that vegetarians eat animals, but that is something only SOME people who eat fish (or for instance chicken) do.
Trying what? I don't see anyone who eats meat as trying anything other than to eat meat. I also don't respect omnivores for what they do and don't know where you are getting your poor information.
If someone is calling themselves vegetarian or whatever form of -etarian they choose to use but eat meat how is that trying to be vegetarian? It is trying to claim something you are not just to fit into something you can't fit into yet. I have no problem with those trying to be vegetarian but if they aren't trying but are claiming they are that bothers me.
It is pretty simple to be vegetarian it doesn't take much to do it. All you really need to do at this point (since vegetarianism has been weakened from being more like strict vegetarianism is now to eating animal products) is not eat meat of any kind or slaughter by-products of any kind from any animal in "kingdom animalia" It is so dirt simple anyone could do it.
Vegetarians don't eat meat, pescevores do eat meat so I am not sure why you would need to put them in the same category. A meat eating diet and a non meat eating diet are two different things. A meat eating diet should be in the same category as a carnist/omnivore. No real need to change any of that.
But Pescatarians aren't vegetarians, and this is technically the vegetarian section. But there's no "pescatarian" section, and many of those are in transition from non-vegetarian to vegetarian, so they use pescatarian as a stepping stone, so I don't care if they post questions here...so long as they don't call themselves vegetarians (because vegetarians don't eat fish). When I was vegetarian, I told someone this, their first response: so...you eat fish? NO!!
But I also don't think they're "better" than non-vegetarians. They simply shift the death from the land to the sea, it's not like they're killing less animals. And there's aquaculture, so it's not like it's against factoring farming, since it's just a shift from land to the sea. If someone were truly against factory farming, they'd eat organic, grass fed meat (also, you do get more meat out of a cow than a giant fish, so it's not killing less).
Basically, so long as they use the proper terms and don't act moral about their decision, I have no issues with pescatarians whatsoever.
I have nothing against pescatarians. Actually, I quite respect the pescatarian lifestyle and the religion that gave birth to the movement. To me it seems that is you are going to eat meat, wild caught fish would be far more humane (not taking into consideration the damage that the fishing industry is doing, which is a different issue).
What I cannot stand are the pescatarians who choose to call themselves vegetarians. Thanks to this, people who know that I am a vegetarian think it is acceptable to serve me a salmon steak.
Still, a pescatarian who refers to them self as a vegetarian is not as bad as a poula-pesca-vegetarian. Yeah, do the math on that one. That means that they do not eat red meat, but they'll eat fish and fowl.
People eat what they prefer and are happy with. I eat fish occasionally but never meat in any other form.
I see it as a good move, I hate the thought of animals being reared, farmed, driven about and then carted off to the abattoir to wait to be slaughtered. Fish, in my opinion, are caught in the sea having spent a natural life and die quickly. Also I enjoy fish but not meat so I'm a pescetarian and am happy with it.
I do respect pescatarians for not eating red meat, they are doing their bit to help reduce animal abuse, what annoys me is when some people eat fish and call themselves a vegetarian,
It is hypocritical to say you don't eat animals, and then eat fish! Fish are sentient, and fishing is cruel and painful! They are cut open while they are still alive and their scales and guts are removed and they feel everything, and they are overfishing the oceans! Dolphins and turtles drown in their cruel nets, and sharks have their fins cut off while they die a painful death in the oceans! Pescatarians are the root cause of all of this so tell me why should I respect them?

I'm fine with pescaterians, at least they're trying. It just annoys me when they say they're a vegetarian.
