Buy them at any mill, they will give them to you for quite cheap. I'm looking for stone and clay, if you know where to get them, please tell me in my question and you'll get 10 points :).
I went to Anga's Mill west of Windhelm and after chopping a few loads of firewood for Aeri I asked if I could cut my own logs and she said go ahead. For each log I got 10 sawn logs.
It is possible to actually cut the logs yourself, if you are looking to spend as little gold as possible. I wish I could provide more information, but I am still trying to figure out the specifics myself.
What I know so far is when I speak to Hert at Half Moon Mill and say "id like to buy some lumber", i have an option to ask if i can cut the logs myself. She replies "Sure thing friend, Ill even have it delivered to your building site, no charge." As apposed to other millers who rejected that request.
This is where Im stuck. Sometimes, after I cut logs Ill get a notification that Ive received 10 logs. I think it has something to do with the amount of lumber Ive cut. Ill update with more info when I figure it out.
It's perfect if you are just starting out or if you're a seasoned carpenter. you will like it for sure !
It has almost 20.000 woodworking plans and you have a CAD/DWG software to view and edit the plans. You have step-by-step instructions with photos and high quality blueprints and schematics. If you are a beginner this is the easiest way to start your woodworking projects, and if you already have experience you can anyway find a lot of interesting ideas!
To answer the clay question, I bought the land in Falkreath, and there is 2 clay deposits right behind the workbench so maybe explore the area a little bit an there will probably be one there
to answer 2nd question ov guy below i think clay may be need to be made from something like smelted but not sure imma try just seeing if they got clay at warmaidens or find out what i need to make clay but yea to add 3 wings prolly need to find out where 2 get each thing. if not maybe a general goods store?
I tried all kinds of stuff before I stumbled on this: (also deleted the downloaded hearthfire file and reinstalled) I had just married Aela the huntress, had her as a follower first. Then asked Ria (whiterun) to follow me to my house. Got inside and saw the dialoge for her to become my stewart. Then I was able to buy lumber and such.

RE:
Where do you find sawn logs in skyrim hearthfire?
New add on to skyrim, hearthfire, starts you off with a few sawn logs but I need more. Where do I go for that?

If you do a quest for Aerie at Anga's mill to deliver a message to the Jarl of Dawnstar, she will let you cut your own wood after that.
