Dogs by nature have the instinct to chase anything that runs from them. Cats are usually small and inferior compared to dogs in a fight so they often run away causing the dogs instinct to kick in and they give chase. However, dogs raised around cats like my dog.. would never chase or hurt a cat.

The first responder is right...because the cats run. A dog won't chase a cat that doesn't run. He might fight it, but that's a different story.
A dog will chase a ball, a stick, a child, a car, a rabbit, a jogger, a mailman...so a cat isn't anything unusual to be chased.
Not all dogs will chase cats. I have seen it the other way around in many cases.
Why do men chase women? Instinct.
because they run
