I've just been watching one of my favourite films...Van Helsing and he gets called Gabriel by Dracula, I've watched it often and still can't work it out, and also why does he have the same ring as Anna's family, that confuses me. Any clarification on either of these issues would be much appreciated.

Director Stephen Sommers claimed in an interview he changed the main character's name from Abraham Van Helsing to Gabriel Van Helsing, as he did not think he could have a lead character named Abraham. The Irishman who wrote Dracula, Bram Stoker, named the character after himself - Bram being a shortening of Abraham.
It is because - Dracula reveals that Van Helsing is really Gabriel, the Left Hand of God—as well as the one who originally murdered him. He offers to restore Van Helsing's memories, but Van Helsing refuses, deciding that "some things are better left forgotten". Van Helsing tells Dracula that his children will die if he is killed. Dracula challenges him to "go ahead," whereupon Van Helsing becomes a werewolf and enters a final battle with Dracula (who turns into a giant bat-like creature).
