The difference between XP Home and XP Pro is that XP Pro is built to work in an enterprise or Domain, it is also built to accept Group policies which is a set behavioral rules from another (Domain controller). So to answer your XP question, you gain nothing you'll be able to see by upgrading your XP Home to XP Pro. As for upgrading to Vista Home Premium, I've heard horror stories about Vista with performance, application handling and memory usage; I have never used vista but administer a network of 40+ computer and a few are vista. For the most part it works fine, people here don't seem to complaint about it.
In other words, my suggestion is don't install it if you don't need to. But if you want to have something newer, go for it. FYI, Windows 7 it is better than Vista, but their look and functionality are similar; just consider that before upgrading if you decide.
Good luck!
well xp pro is faster over vista home
