A. Expenditures = e = $120 + $1.14 * b
Expenditures are the sum of the printer (120) and $1.14 for every book, b, printed.
B. Revenue = r = $12 * b
Revenue is $12 for every book he sells.
C. He breaks even when Revenue = Expenditures. He makes a profit if Revenue > Expenditures. First find the break-even point (because that's easy).
r = e
$12 * b = $120 + $1.14 * b
Now solve for b.
(12 - 1.14) b = 120
10.86 * b = 120
b = 120 / 10.86 = 11.05
Since we don't want to print part of a book, he would need to print 12 complete books to make a profit. Remember 11.05 books would be the break-even point. At 11 books he loses money:
let b = 11 books
e = 120 + 1.14 * b = 120 + 1.14 * 11 = $132.54
r = 12 * b = 12 * 11 = $132
Expenses are > Revenue for 11 printed and sold books.
let b = 12 books
e = 120 + 1.14 * b = 120 + 1.14 * 12 = $133.68
r = 12 * 12 = $144
Expenses are < Revenue for 12 printed books, so he makes a profit starting at 12 books!
Good luck,
