Lawanda is 27 years younger than her father. In 5 years, the sum of their ages with be 49. How many years old is Lawanda's father now?
Can you explain a bit how to do this? D: I'm stuck.
Let the age of her father right now be x.
Lawanda is 27 years younger, or x-27.
In five years, Lawanda is x-22 years old and her father is x+5 years old... and the sum of their ages will be 49.
x - 22 + x + 5 = 49
2x - 17 = 49
2x = 66
x = 33
Her father is 33 years old right now.
Call the ages now L and F
Lawanda is 27 years younger than father works out as
L + 27 = F
In 5 years their ages with be L + 5 and F + 5 so the sum of their ages in 5 years is
L + 5 + F + 5 or
L + F + 10 this sum is 49, so we can say
L + F + 10 = 49 which we can simplify into
L + F = 39
We want to find F, so we need to eliminate L from the equations.
Take L + F = 39 and turn it into
L = 39 - F
Now go back to
L + 27 = F and replace L with 39 - F to get
39 - F + 27 = F combine the constants to get
66 - F = F add F to both sides to get
66 = F + F = 2F and divide both sides by 2 to get
33 = F.
Father is 33, Lawanda is 27 years younger, so she must be 6. In 5 years she will be 11 and father will be 38 and 11 + 38 = 49.
f= father's age
f-27 = lawanda's age
(f+5) + (f-27+5) =49
2f +10-27 =49
f=33 yoa
the dad is 33, lawnda is 33-27 =6 yoa
in five years the dad is 38 and lawnda is 11, 38+11= 49
Lawanda's father is 5 years older now. ;)
L = F - 27
(L + 5) + (F + 5) = 49
F - 27 + F = 39
2F = 66
F = 33
(f) for her father (l) for her
f-27=l
l+f=39
39-27=12
12/2=6
6+27=33
33+6=39
therefore
l=6
f=33
