Joey Gamache totally got robbed. They stopped the fight way too soon. Gamache didn't look any worse for wear than Balboa gets when he was in his prime.
Its sad what happened to Joey Gamache. I guess we can't blame Gatti too much though, if he was able to make weight. The problem with this is that Gatti was never a Junior Lightweight. Like Shane Mosley, he boiled himself down to weight and then put it back on in the 24 hours before the fight.
Someone once asked me why Joey didn't just simply do the same thing. The answer is because Joey wasn't really a welterweight in a 130lb body like Gatti was. It's much easier to put back on your "Natural weight" than it would be to GAIN weight.
Mosley was a big lightweight because he was really a welterweight all along. It's fortunate he never seriously hurt anyone. It's really hard to blame the fighter. It's a real shame but if Gatti was able to make the 130lb limit at the time of the weigh-in, then maybe someone should have investigated to see if he's doing everything naturally or with some kind of help.
I like Gatti by KO or TKO by the middle rounds. Corrales was a tall fighter but he never used that advantage and prefer to ramble with his opponents. That's tailor made for Gatti who could mix body and head attacks to soften and set up his opponent for KO or TKO finish. Corrales might have had a strong chin but his long, lean torso would have presented a very tempting target for Gatti who have also proven he could withstand his opponents strongest punches in sustained combat. Gatti would have stopped Corrales with the same shot to the ribcage that he felled the supposedly tough Leonard Dorin.
gamache was too brave for his own good in that fight, coming back firing after two knockdowns in the first.
joey was, and still is, a class act, and i watched a recent you tube interview in which he talks about being an assistant trainer to manny stewart, and he shows little or no evidence of damage, thank god.
The event of the weigh in itself brings up lots of controversy. Fighters usually get 24 hour to weigh in and get rehydrated. Gatti is notorius for putting on serious amounts of pounds after weigh ins, so his actual weight walking into the ring was a mystery, though the result was not.

We may never know.
Yes it was with Gatti knocking out Gamache in the 2nd round of their 10 round fight televised on HBO I believe it was sometime in year 2000.
Gatti had weight 19 pounds over the limit going into this fight which is why Arturo almost killed Joey.
Joey Camache is I believe brain damage due to this devasting knockout suffered at the hands of Arturo Gatti.
