open a dos window. I don't know what operating system your running so it's hard to say how, but if it's xp do
Start/All Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt
Type in the Window
ipconfig /all
It will list a bunch of ipaddresses of interest
Write down the ones next to DNS Servers, if there are none this may be the problem
take one of these dns numbers and type it into the after you type this into the command prompt
tracert -d
so if you had a dns address of 1.2.3.4 you need to type
tracert -d 1.2.3.4
This should give you a list of routers between you and the DNS server if it just responds with '*'s then your not getting to the dns server. You may get '*' at the last hop, this can be normal.
Ok, if that failed to return router ip addresses and just returned '*'s you can't reach that DNS server, try the other one if you have one.
If it did return addresses try the same command without the -d like
tracert 1.2.3.4
this sould return the same list with some or all or the lines also having a node name just before the Ipaddresses.
if you got the node names your DNS is working
If all of that worked I need to know more. Like when did this stop working and has anything been added or changed since the last time the machine was up and working ? What operating system is it ?
First - type a web address into the address bar and press enter. That will allow you to see if you have your default page set to 'blank'.
Next type an IP address in the address bar rather than a domain name - try 209.85.175.99 (Google - oh OK that should be 209.191.93.52 - Yahoo) If you get these pages then your problem is the DNS server is not set correctly.
Next check under 'Internet Options' in control panel how you are connected to Internet. You'll need to look at the Connections tab and make sure it is set as your ISP suggests.
