Brazilians, usually don't understand spanish. I will explain why.
Some Brazilians don't even understand the portuguese spoken in Portugal. Why?
The language spoken in Brazil and Portugal is the same, but the accent is very different.
It's like the english spoken in America and the english spoken in UK.
Spanish (like spoken in Spain and almost all Latin America) is another language. There is a historical relationship between spanish and portuguese, but today they are two different languages.
However, if a person from Argentina talks slowly to a Brazilian, he probably will understand a lot.
But if a Brazilian watch a spanish movie, he probably will understand almost nothing.
Why?
It's because of the accent. The language is not so different, spanish and portuguese have a lot of similar words. (but be carefull: there are a lot of "false friends" too).
It is easier to a Brazilian understand spanish than italian.
Italian is very different. But spanish and portuguese are very similar. The accent of native speakers makes more difficult the understanding between spanish speakers and portuguese speakers.
So, the only language Brazilians really understand is their own mother tongue: portuguese.
The languages are similar, but not identical. The pronounciation is very different, even though many words are written (almost) the same way. There are also words that are completely different, plus a lot of false friends. I guess a Brazilian would understand the main idea of a text written in Spanish, but if they heard someone speaking Spanish, not really. Unless it's very basic stuff.
Im Brazilian and some things we can understand but other things are completely different, even though people usually think that its the same thing and all that it changes is some words. But lets say you ask something to a brazilian like "how much is this" in spanish they will probably understand.,
Not so well. We understand very well what we read in spanish, but not what we hear. If someone speaks slowly to us, it is possible to understand something. But we don't understand two spanish speakers if they talk to each other.
