Can I use depression as mitigating circumstances to take gap year from University?

I am doing MSc and it started in September 2011, but after that due to my past problems I had the severe depression therefore I started taking the services of my University's student counselling. Now from past few weeks my depression has gone really bad and even the health adviser has contacted to my GP that he should give me antidepressant as my depression is going worse as I have strong symptoms of committing suicide (my health adviser wrote me this in my email) though I have never tried to finish myself, I can't sleep for more than 2 or 3 hours, I don't enjoy the things that I enjoyed before, I have continuously back pain, and chest pain, now as I can't concentrate on my studies therefore I have planned to interrupt my studies and to restart it again in January 2013, my University allows that a student can interrupt his/her studies medical or extenuating circumstances.

Can anyone please tell me that is my excuse of depression will be counted as a mitigating circumstance?

Thanks in advance.
