Civ 5 Trade Route issues?

I managed to get an excellent Continental map where I was mostly alone on two continents. The resources are great for a Huge map, but there's one problem. There's a ton of Oil in the desert that's inland and all of my cities with the exception of two are tied to a trade route by Harbors.

I have the two inland cities tied to the capital by roads since they're near by, but the one I'm trying to build around all the oil is far away.

Can I create a road between an Inland city to a Harbor city, and if I do this, will the inland city connect to my trade routes? Or do inland cities need to be directly connected to the Capital?

Update:

Problem is that I have control of two continents. Well, it's a really big one that's divided into two by a very narrow strip of land that's two blocks thick. So, the northern continent is pretty much all under my control, the southern one is currently under development. All of my cities are along the coast in the southern one. But to build a road from the center of the southern continent, all the way to my Capital which is practically on the other side of the map, is a massive inconvenience. :/
