I would either go with classical or romantic music (music from the Classical and Romantic era). So that means background music such as Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin. Or Jazz. Jazz is cool with their blue notes. Except if you're 14 and it's for the 13-17 age group, I think the people would prefer more modern music like rock and roll?

for a tea party i would suggest something light, e.g.
Eine kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart
Spring from the Four Seasons by Vivaldi
Waltz of the Flowers from the Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky
The Moldau from ma vlast by Smetana
Hungarian Dance No.5 by Brahms
The Hebrides overture by Mendelssohn

I agree with Alexius, something light. The pieces he suggested are perfect, but I want to add a few more to his list.
Serenade #10 In B Flat, "Gran Partita" 3rd Mvt. - Mozart
Romance in B Flat - Faure
Arabesque - Debussy
The "Minute Waltz" No.6 - Chopin
Prelude - Chopin
Humoresque - Dvorak
Horn Concerto #4 in E Flat 3rd Mvt. - Mozart
Canon in D Major - Pachelbel
Piano Concerto #21 in C 2cd Mvt. - Mozart
Enjoy!
Any one of Vivaldi or Bach's violin concerto.
Also Vivaldi's the four season's is exceptional and well known of course, so the guests may get a kick out of humming along.
My suggestion is anything from Chopin, there are lots of great piano pieces to choose from!
Variations on a theme by Paganini (Brahms)
