Restarting may help, it just means its not recognizing your sound card. Try right clicking my computer, and hitting properties. Then under like the devices tab (sorry I don't know exactly, I'm not in windows right now) there should be a device manager button. Click on that, and check under the audio + box (something like that) and see if there is a device recognized. If there is... hmm... but if there is not, or there is a device somewhere else with a /!\ next to it, IE unrecognized audio device, then try going to your computers website (dell.com, hp.com whichever) and downloading the sound driver for your computer. If nothing works then your sound card may be fried... although I don't know how that would happen.
HI ! It's simple. Computer only says this when their is a driver problem.
When you got your compute they must have given you a CD or DVD which has all the drivers for WINDOWS.
Go and search that CD and put that CD into the CD/DVD drive of your computer.
1- Click START.
2- Right click MY COMPUTER
3- Select PROPERTIES
4- Select HARDWARE
5- Select Device DEVICE MANAGER
6- Click the + (Plus) sign in front of " Sound, Video and Game Controllers".
7- If it has a (yellow exclamation sign or a question mark)
8- Right click on it and select DRIVERS.
9- Select UPDATE DRIVER
10- Check "YES THIS TIME ONLY" and NEXT
11- Select this option "Install the software automatically (Recommended)"
12- Click next it will search the whole CD/DVD drive and will install the driver.
13- If it has a RED CROSS then right click on it and select ENABLE.
14- Restart your computer and get going.
15- Else search from the CD/DVD itself and if you find a AUDIO drive install it.
If you have vista, right click the little speaker icon on the bottom right. Click playback devices. In the window that opens, right click it in any empty space in the middle. Click show disconnected devices and click show disabled devices. If anything comes up, enable it. Thats what worked for me! Good luck!
restarting usually solves the problem, sometimes machines freak out. if it does not help go into device manager see if your audi device has a yellow mark next to it. start/run..type devmgmt.msc..then hit enter..it takes you directly into device manager
