Does using CD's on DVD drives shorten the life span? Yes.
The more you use a drive, the sooner the drive will eventually fail.
So if you have both a CD-ROM and a DVD-ROM installed on your computer, it would be a good idea to stick to playing the CD's on the CD drive to make the DVD drive last longer.
But that is being overly-frugal as the life span of a DVD drive is probably around 5-10 years if kept out of a harsh working environment(dusty areas).
CDs won't damage the drive. If you have a DVD only drive, the cd will not be readable and your computer will act as if there is not a disk in the drive. If you have a DVD/CD combination drive, then your computer will recognize both cds and dvds.
im a computer tech and i dont see how in anyway it can damage a dvd drive they are the same thing really except how information is wrote on them. most dvd drives will read off CDs so No the information you know is false
However, if you put a CD or a DVD on your turntable and tried to play it, the CD and/or DVD would be ruined as well as possibly the stylus needle of the turntable.

Cds and Dvds do the same job. So there is no way it would damage any drive. So that's just not true.

Playing scratch cd/dvd in cd/dvd roms drive will not hurt the laser at all, but it can put some stress on the small motor.
This is false. In fact, most DVD drives will read standard music CD's.
No it's not true.

Just thought you might want to know that. : P
No. You can put cd's in your home dvd player and it wont blow up so the same for a computer's optical drive.
They are both optical disks, a laser reads the disk and plays the sounds. I have used CD/DVD interchangably and it worked fine.
There is nothing there to damage,it is merely a beam of light that reads the disk. That and a motor to spin it.
your friend is pulling your leg.
It wont hurt it. Infact, DVD drives are by design made backwards compatible to read cd's.
