Yes, but it depends on what model. None of the new models support backwards compatability, only the original ones. The quickest way to tell if a PS3 can play PS2 games and is backwards capatible is to count the USB ports in the front, if it has 4 USB ports then it will, if it doesn't it wont. All PS3 will play PS1 games though.

James...your wrong the 40g cannot play PS2 games.
The only other PS3 model to play PS2 games is the 80g that came bundled with Metal Gear Solid or with MotorStorm, but these went out of production in 2008! These used software to play PS2 games and could only play about 80% of the PS2 games out.
if u have an 20gb 40gb 0r 60gb ps3 if u have an 120gb slim or the 250gb slim like me u have to buy an playstation network card and buy them from your playstation store
