Okay so today I went to the dollar store and bought some sponges. I'm using them to store my stud earrings. The idea is I stick the studs into the sponge so they'll stay put and won't get lost or anything, and I think it's a great way to keep them organized. But I just found out that sponges grow bacteria. Do they still grow bacteria if they never touch water? Because the sponges that I'm using the keep my studs organized are probably never going to get wet, so will they still grow bacteria?

they need water in order to grow bacteria. they are talking about sponges that you use at the sinks and tubs.
It's not likely but there is a remote possibility--bacteria are common on the surface of your skin, so if you remove your stud earrings and put them on the sponge for storage there's the possibility that bacteria could transfer from your ear to the earring to the sponge.
Cellulose sponges (because they are primarily made of wood) can serve as a medium for the growth of harmful bacteria or fungi, especially when the sponge is allowed to remain wet between uses. Some manufacturers treat sponges with anti-microbial toxins to prevent this. To kill the bacteria on a sponge, one can fully soak it in clean water, then microwave it on high for two to three minutes.
The bacteria growth occurs in sponges that have gotten wet AND have collected bacteria from food waste. You will have no problem with dry sponges.
yep i would toss the idea and think of another way to store my earrings!
