I unlock iPhones professionally (not in the U.K. though) so I know the procedure does in fact work, and you're probably just looking at the wrong website. But yeah, you can't update it without doing taking more advanced steps first (preserving SSH blobs, etc.). Also, this isn't Apple's fault as they do sell contract-free, factory unlocked iPhones as we'll; you just bought a locked, contract one. And I can assure you you'd be less satisfied with an Android phone. Back to topic, update the post with your version of iOS and which iPhone you have so I can provide you with what you need to unlock.

If you don't want to be turned into an angry bird after accepting a "survey for Angry Bird" as a condition for unlocking your iphone, then don't even bother trying. Your PC will be flooded with unwanted softwares that came as collateral for accepting the Angry Bird survey. At the end of it all, you are politely and apologetically told to go to a website where you are asked to pay for the possibility of unlocking your iphone.

I'm not sure if you have Craigslist or something like it over there, but if you do then search jailbreak iPhone and you will find plenty of ads from people offering they're service in doing just that.
