I am considering following a DC collection and am not sure if i should just get the 12 comics or the novel for it. They both cost roughly the exact same amount.
There's a bit of a novelty factor for both of them.
I personally can't get my hands on a lot of comic books, so I just buy the graphic novel version. I find that the print paper is of a higher quality in graphic novels.
But for the sake of being a collector, try to get the comic book versions.
I prefer having collected editions myself. You can put them on a shelf instead of in a box, and you can read a whole story at once without having to dig out a whole bunch of comics.
