The exam was proctored (monitored in person) by an AFA member, and took 8 hours. I got my certification 25 years ago, before computer programs were common, so hand-calculation of charts was half the exam. The other half consisted of general interpretation and specific question that you needed to answer about the client and about their current life. The test was sent off for grading at AFA. Many astrologers who I view as skilled and competent were unable to pass the test, but I don't know why ... it certainly has the reputation of not being easy to get a PMAFA designation. Although those who couldn't pass the PMAFA have passed the easier AMAFA.
Many places offer astrology course, and many astrologers also teach astrology at various levels. AFA also has distance learning (and is probably the best place to take course if you think you want a PMAFA designation).
ISAR (International Society for Astrological Research) also has training and testing and certification programs, and is respected in the astrological community.
