Here's the first problem
Write the following absolute value expressions as piecewise expressions.
1. l x^2 - 1 l
I don't want just an answer I would like the steps on how to do this, because I have about 8 other similar problems to do. Also if anyone who answers this would be willing to help me some other stuff I'll probably be posting more info. I have summer hw for Calculus and I can't remember half the stuff I should and am having trouble finding good information on how to do them. Again, I don't particularly want answers I want the steps. Thanks!

Well, (x^2 - 1) is the difference of perfect squares. How to factor the difference of perfect squares is something you simply need to remember...
|(x-1)(x+1)|
Now, the absolute value can thought of as two different equations...
(x-1)(x+1)
and
-1(x-1)(x+1)
What to do really depends on what question is asked.
How do we convert this to a piecewise function y=abs(x+4) +abs(x -1)
