About a month ago(My family hasn't had the money to go get this fixed yet), My Laptop told me to do a windows update, so you know, I did. And when I restarted it, All that came up was that Windows is missing a system 32 file. So I brought it into geek squad, just to see what was wrong, and the guy couldn't even get my poor laptop to run in safe mode):
So I asked the guy, what might be wrong. He said occasionally it will change settings, causing this to happen. And since he couldn't get into safe mode, he thinks that there are other pop up errors behind this one, but this is just the first one in line.
At the bottom of that screen, it says to run the cd to fix this, but my laptop didn't come with this cd. So really the only way to fix this, (as the guy told me, and a bunch of friends) is to reboot. I already know that I'm going to lose word documents, pictures, etc, but I'm not sure how to reboot. And I'm not sure if i'll lose other stuff on my computer like aim, microsoft word, and other programs like that. Basically, I'd like the lowdown on the reboot process and any other advise you guys have.
Thanks(:
Update:I don't have the XP disk

What crock of crap as usual, he could have fixed it for yuo if he knew how to as they would hold the correct OEM CD.
Anyway, you do need an XP CD, if XP came with the laptop, then you need an OEM version of CD, then do a 'Repair install' to repair the core system files. this method is almost totally safe so chances are you wont loose any thing already stored on the laptop.
We do this all the time(daily) in a comp maintenance class during High School.
You will need:
A Microsoft Windows XP disk
Lots of patience. It takes us approximately 40 minutes per computer.
steps: Turn on your computer, put in the disk, and then reboot your computer. If you do not receive a simple "press button to boot from disk" you will have to enter the BIOS menu and manually perform a Boot From Disk. BIOS menus tend to vary from computer to computer, so I don't have a guide for that.
2. Scroll through the prompts until you are at the "Repair" option.
3. Accept the "repair" option. Keep an eye on your computer for any more prompts. After the installation, you WILL have to "activate your computer." This should not be a problem unless you have activated the computer 3-4 times already. Microsoft may step in and ask why your activating it so many times, or block the activation. Simply activate by phone to bypass this. Your computer should be good as new at this point.
This happen mostly in Windows HOME EDITION, if possible Restore your pc to earlier date,IF it does not work just Reformat and install fresh clean operating system..
try reinstalling windows. do not format. Just reinstall over the existing one. Or you can try to find a free fix here. http://registrycleanercompare.blogspot.com/
