My brain crashes when I think about the metric system, and it's a pain!
I'm a kind of person who thinks about numbers and quantities, I was born in a country where SI (cm, km, kg etc...) was the official measuring system, in Canada it is the same, the official system is SI, but people use metric system all the time, and I'm clueless.
I always have to use a cellphone app to calculate what those units really mean?
What is the easiest and more memorable way to know what these units mean, how do American children learn what these units mean?
1- Gallon
2- Inch
3- Feet
4- Yard
5- Mile
6- Pound
7- Square inch
8- Square feet
and etc...?
When someone says 5 meters, I can imagine how long that is, how do you do the same for these units?

Um...SI and the metric system are two names for the same thing where I'm from. The units you've listed are part of the U.S Customary system.
It is a very confusing system, though. A good way to remember most of the units of length is by remembering that a yard and a meter are about the same length, but there is a difference anyway. Bottom line is, SI makes much more sense and the only real way to know what these units mean is by practicing.
