Im trying to get data from my old computer to my new computer. I was told to use a crossover cable to do this. I was also told it was a plug & play but it doesnt seem to be working. Does anyone know how to set it up so I can do this?

First you have to buy a cross-over cable or if you have to crimp your own the pins are :
1 - 3
2 - 6
3 - 1
6 - 2
4,5,7 and 8 doesn't get used...
You have to give both PC's a IP address, under you Local Area Network properties, you find TCP/IP.
Make the one
IP - 192.168.0.1
Subnet - 255.255.255.0
Other one you make
IP - 192.168.0.2
Subnet - 255.255.255.0
Then on the machine with the data, right click on the folder with the data in and say Share, and give it a name.
Then on the PC, you want the info to go,
Say, Start, Run, and type in the other PC's IP, i.e \\192.168.0.1 (or 2 at the end)
You'll see the folder you shared, and can drag and drop the files...
If you can manage this, just run the Home Networking Wizard, and follow the steps. After that, share the folders.
You must have Ethernet cards in both computers the old and the new one
Configure both Ethernet cards with ip addresses on the same subnet for example
Old pc 192.168.1.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
New pc 192.168.1.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
You can do that by right click on my network places on the desktop properties and then right click your local area connection and click properties and scroll down to the (TCP/IP) highlight it and click properties and put the ip addresses and that’s how you get the connectivity
at first confirm you have the splendid cable. in case you place the plugs jointly area via area the connections could seem distinctive. If this is great, attempt yet another cable. constrained or no connectivity regularly refers to on the spot.
coneect the cables and configure the proper ip configuration and share the your folder.
