I'm a high school student in New York and I want to try to go to other countries for a month or a semester. I've always been interested in this concept.
Also if anyone here has every been on such a program I'd like to know your opinions of it.

Rotary club international sponsors student exchanges (check with your chamber of commerce). Here's a link:
I went on two student exchanges, one year to Germany through a university work program and two years in France which I organized myself through a magazine I found in the French Department at university.
For high school students I think Rotary is the best option. It's tried and true, a very reputable organization.
Have fun!
generally, you get into such things through your school.
Most schools in the US have connections to exchange programs already.
Also, there is Rotary Club...they work, more or less independently of the schools.
Or you could check out the programs on this list, then take that to the guidance office at school, and ask which programs they will let you go on.
