Does your TV have a 15 pin D-sub connection point? Does your computer have a 15 pin D-sub connection point. These are the standard 15 pin VGA connectons. If so, just a cable from your compuer to your TV is all that is needed. You'll also have to (on your computer) select the VGA output as the primary output port. And also select the correct input # on your TV. My laptop uses the function key combination Fn+F4. Your computer may be different.
If your HDTV has a VGA port then just use a VGA cable. VGA is capable of HD resolutions. It might just be called "PC Input" on your HDTV. Take a look at the back and see if you have that kind of input.
But that's video only. If you want audio as well, you will likely need to do a Stereo Mini cable or Stereo Mini to RCA. If you do have a VGA port on the TV look for what kind of audio it uses for input. Some will use just Stereo Mini (like headphone jack). In that case go headphone or audio out from the computer into that jack with a simple Stereo Mini cable like this, http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Mini-Stereo-Dubbing-P... But if it has an RCA pair (red/white) you need a Stereo Mini to RCA cable like this, http://www.amazon.com/Dayton-3-5RCA-12-3-5mm-Stere...
Now, if your HDTV only has HDMI in, and your computer only VGA you, I'm afraid you need to spend a few bucks. You need a converter box. Its the only reliable way to accomplish what you're trying to do. Don't get suckered by VGA to HDMI cables they don't work (you can't convert the analog signal of VGA to the digital of HDMI over a cable). For more information on the converter you will need see here, http://sewelldirect.com/articles/vga-to-hdmi.aspx
